King Harald of Norway has died at 89. Now, King Charles has offered his condolences.
The Norwegian royal family confirmed King Harald’s death in a statement on Friday, August 28. He died peacefully at Rikshospitalet in Oslo, surrounded by his family, according to the royal family.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away today. King Harald passed away peacefully at Rikshospitalet on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 a.m.,” the Norwegian royal family wrote.
King Harald had been admitted to the hospital on Monday, August 17, and had been receiving treatment with steroids in recent weeks for hemolytic anemia. According to Cleveland Clinic, the condition is “a blood disorder that typically happens when your red blood cells break down or die faster than your body can replace them with new blood cells.”
According to reports, the 89-year-old monarch was surrounded by his family during his final hours.

News of King Harald’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across Europe, including from the British royal family.
Now, King Charles has shared a statement offering his condolences to the Norwegian people and royal family as they mourn the loss of their longtime monarch.
“For thirty-five years, King Harald served his people with unwavering dedication, guiding Norway through times of great change with warmth and humility.
“As Norway mourns the loss of so towering a figure, my whole family join in remembering a much-loved kinsman and friend whose kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty echoed from across the sea and across the decades.”
A special musical tribute will be played to King Harald at the Guard Change later on Friday, it’s understood.
King Charles’ words come as Norway mourns the death of a monarch who had reigned for more than three decades, with attention now turning to the royal family as the country prepares to say farewell to its king.
