Chicago, IL — Immigration authorities have detained 52-year-old Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez of Waukegan after alleging he murdered and dismembered 37-year-old Megan Bos earlier this year. He was first arrested in April on charges including concealing and abusing a corpse and obstruction of justice, after Bos’s remains were found in a bleach-filled container on his property.
Bos was reported missing on March 9; relatives say they last heard from her in February. Investigators allege her body was kept on the property for nearly two months, and DHS reported she was decapitated before being placed in the container.
After his initial April arrest, Lake County Judge Randie Bruno ordered Mendoza-Gonzalez’s release, drawing criticism from some officials. ICE agents re-arrested him Saturday at a Chicago market, and he is now in federal custody pending further proceedings.
Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner cited public-safety concerns and pointed to Illinois’ SAFE-T Act changes to pretrial detention. State Rep. Tom Weber also criticized the case’s handling. Federal officials say they’re coordinating with local authorities to ensure the case moves forward and to seek justice for Bos’s family.
