Salamina wildfires LIVE: Evacuation order on Greek island over Peristeria & Selinia fires

An evacuation order has been issued on the Greek island of Salamis after two wildfires erupted nearly simultaneously. The separate blazes broke out in the Peristeria area, and in the Selinia area, with the latter heading toward the popular village of Kaki Vigla.

The Civil Protection has issued four calls to evacuate the Peristeria area, with authorities writing on the 112Greece X account: “Fire in your area. If you are in the Peristeria and Aias club area of ​​Salamina in the Attica region, evacuate via Peristerion Avenue towards Aianteio. Follow the instructions of the authorities.” Salamis is among the most popular Greek islands for tourism, also thanks to its proximinity to Athens.

Huge emergency response
At least 146 firefighters, 32 vehicles, and 10 aerial assets are battling the fire.

Two bodies found as wildfires hit Greece
Reports from Greek media outlet Demokratia said “two bodies of unknown identities were found during the extinguishing of the fire in Peristeria, Salamis, on Andromachis Street, near which the fire started”.

A special team from the Investigative Department of the Piraeus Fire Department has been dispatched to the scene to investigate the causes.

People told to evacuate as emergency alert sent to phones
People in the areas of Peristeria or Aias Club in Salamina, Attica are being told to evacuate via Peristerion Avenue towards Aiántio.

A message from 112 was sent to residents to evacuate.

Residents should follow the instructions of the authorities and move away from the affected area immediately.
