The Things You Can Take Home From A Hotel And The Things That You Absolutely Can’t

A comfortable hotel stay comes with thoughtful touches, but not everything is a parting gift. Individually packaged toiletries—shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, toothpaste, and shower caps—are generally fine to take. Basic branded pens and notepads are also often yours to keep. Towels, robes, bedding, furniture, artwork, electronics, and appliances, however, normally belong to the property. That includes the hair dryer, kettle, iron, and coffee maker. Missing room items may result in charges after you leave.

Some amenities fall into a gray area. Disposable slippers may be complimentary, while reusable pairs should stay unless the hotel says otherwise. Hanger policies can vary, too. Check any labels or room information, and ask reception whenever you are uncertain. If a robe or pillow makes your stay especially lovely, you may be able to buy one. A quick conversation lets you bring home something you love without an uncomfortable misunderstanding or an unwanted bill.
