This ’80s Movie Star Moved to the Countryside to Raise Her Only Son & Started a Textile Company – Inside Her Life
Karen Allen’s breakthrough as Marion Ravenwood in 1981 brought worldwide recognition, but motherhood helped reshape her priorities. Wanting her son, Nicholas Browne, to enjoy a stable childhood, she made the Massachusetts Berkshires her permanent home in 1993. Years earlier, a weather-spoiled ski trip had led her to a 1792 post-and-beam barn on roughly 28 acres. That property became the foundation for a quieter existence, rooted in community rather than filming schedules. Nicholas eventually followed his own passion into a culinary career.
The move also rekindled Allen’s love of textile design, which she had studied before acting. In 2005, she founded Karen Allen Fiber Arts, creating intricate knitwear. A barn converted into a yoga studio offered another outlet. She continued choosing meaningful screen and stage work, including returning to Indiana Jones. Rather than surrendering her career, Allen made room for the other parts of herself—and built a life that belonged to her.
