Major change to how US drafts people into the military expected on December 1 despite controversy
According to the report, legislation signed in December 2025 requires Selective Service to establish automatic registration by December 18, 2026, using existing federal records. That shifts responsibility away from young men, who currently must register within 30 days of turning 18. Supporters say the change will close registration gaps and reduce spending on reminders. In 2024, only 81% of eligible men were registered, leaving roughly one in five outside the system.
The essential reassurance is that registration is not an order to serve. America’s armed forces remain volunteer-based, and this measure does not restart the draft, last used in 1973. Restoring conscription would require further congressional action. Although anxiety intensified amid military operations involving Iran, the report says this registration overhaul predates that conflict and had bipartisan backing. For families confronting an alarming headline, the distinction is critical: changing how names enter a database does not itself send anyone into uniform.
