Why Do Hotels Always Place a Cloth Across the Bed? Most Guests Never Know Its Real Purpose

The cloth laid across the foot of many hotel beds is called a bed runner. Along with adding color and making the room look finished, it can provide a protective layer between the bedding and items guests place on top. Bags, clothing, and shoes may otherwise leave dirt or marks directly on the sheets or duvet. A runner can also catch minor spills, although its effectiveness depends on the fabric and how much of the bed it covers.

For housekeeping, a separate runner may be easier to remove, clean, or replace than larger bedding pieces. But its presence is not a guarantee of cleanliness: laundering practices vary, and not every hotel uses one. Guests generally move it aside before sleeping. If you want to keep luggage away from your sleeping area, use the luggage rack instead. That modest strip combines presentation with practicality, rather than serving as bedding for sleep.
