Found in the oven after cooking Thanksgiving dinner…
A twisted little wheel finally gave it away. The strange lump fused to the oven floor was a disposable lighter, its plastic casing melted and its metal parts exposed. Apparently, someone had left it on a baking tray days before, and it had gone unnoticed when the holiday cooking began. Until that moment, our guesses had ranged from a broken utensil to something resembling wreckage from a tiny drone. Recognizing such a familiar object brought relief, but only briefly.
The implications were sobering: a fuel-filled lighter exposed to oven temperatures could cause a fire or explosion. We switched off the oven and let everything cool before addressing the mess. Nervous laughter eventually replaced the silence, but the lesson outlasted Thanksgiving. Now, before any major meal, we check the oven, its corners, and every tray. What frightened us most wasn’t the unfamiliar shape. It was realizing how easily an everyday oversight had put us at risk.
