Two Point Four Children star Georgina Cates dies suddenly at age 51
Georgina Cates, the British actress best known for An Awfully Big Adventure and 2point4 Children, has died at 51.
Her death was announced by her daughter, Naiia, in a deeply personal tribute shared on Instagram.
“My beautiful, free-spirited mom lived a hard life and still found ways to make herself and others laugh and smile,” Naiia wrote. “Now she can rest easy.”
She remembered her mother not just as an actress, but as a uniquely creative woman who never seemed interested in fitting into anyone else’s mold.
“I will always see you in black and white photos, Virginia Slims, baggy clothes, no bras, big sunglasses, doodling while talking, pleasers, and flip flops and everything in between,” she wrote.
“I love you, thank you for your creativity, curiosity and your bravery to always be true to yourself — no matter what.”
Born Clare Woodgate in Colchester, England, in 1975, Cates discovered acting at a young age. She once said she loved pretending to be other people because she “couldn’t see the point of spending every day just being me.”
That fearless imagination would become a defining part of her career.
She first became known in Britain for playing Jenny Porter on the BBC sitcom 2point4 Children. But she wanted more — and eventually took an extraordinary risk that helped land her a major film role.
For An Awfully Big Adventure, Cates auditioned for the role of Stella Bradshaw but was initially turned down.
She tried again under the name Georgina Cates, transformed her appearance, dyed her hair red and adopted a Liverpool accent, creating an entirely different persona.
This time, she got the part.
The 1995 film, which also starred Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, became one of the most memorable roles of her career. Critics praised Cates for bringing a mixture of innocence, toughness and vulnerability to Stella.
She later appeared alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughn in Clay Pigeons, as well as in Illuminata, Frankie Starlight, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa and Everlasting, her final screen credit.
In Hollywood, she also found love.
Cates married actor Skeet Ulrich in 1997 after the two met at an Oscars party. They later welcomed twins, Naiia and Jakob, before divorcing in 2005.
Away from acting, Cates eventually found another creative outlet in photography.
She once explained why she never wanted to play the same kind of character over and over again.
“I always want to do something different,” she said. “I don’t want to play the same role. I’m just not built that way.”
And perhaps that is the best way to remember her.
Not simply as the actress who appeared alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names, but as a woman who spent her life refusing to be anyone but herself.
Her daughter’s final words captured that spirit perfectly.
“You will always be in my heart,” Naiia wrote. “I love you.”
Georgina Cates is survived by her daughter, Naiia, and son, Jakob. ❤️
