Why Are English Cucumbers Always Vacuum-wrapped In Plastic?
English cucumbers are prized for their mild flavor, tender skin, and small, often barely noticeable seeds. But that delicate skin also makes them vulnerable to moisture loss. Their snug plastic wrapping helps prevent dehydration, keeping them firm and fresh longer than they might remain unwrapped. It also limits direct contact with dirt and handling during transport and shopping. Still, packaging is not a guarantee of cleanliness, and greenhouse growing does not make a cucumber immune to contamination.
When you’re ready to prepare one, always remove and discard the plastic first—it is not edible. Rinse the cucumber under cool running water, gently rubbing its surface, and dry it with a clean towel before slicing. There’s no need for soap. The wrapper also creates an environmental trade-off: it can reduce food spoilage but adds packaging waste. Buy only what you’ll use, store it appropriately, and follow local disposal guidance.
